B.t. Cotton

Certain Lepidopterous insect pests that feed on cotton have demonstrated an ability to develop resistance to many chemical insecticides. Those pests include:

Cotton bollworm
Tobacco budworm
Pink bollworm

Bt cottons, marketed by the Monsanto Company under the registered brand name Bollgard® and Bollgard IITM, express insecticidal proteins from a soil bacterium, Bacillus thuringiensis, subsp. Kurstaki (B.t.k.). The B.t.k. proteins were introduced into cotton via transformation techniques made possible by scientific advances in biotechnology. Scientists believe that lepidopterous cotton pests may, in the future, develop resistance to the B.t.k. proteins expressed in transgenic Bt cottons. It is, therefore, essential that cotton containing the Bollgard gene and Bollgard II genes be managed in ways that retard the development of resistance, hence the term Insect Resistance Management (IRM). To sustain the economic, environmental and consumer benefits derived from Bollgard and Bollgard II cotton, cotton producers must embrace IRM.
