He has longstanding experience in the assessment and authorization process of plant protection products as well as in the development of general rules for Good Agricultural Practices and Integrated Pest Management. As a lawyer, he is the legal affairs expert with the Julius Kühn-Institute, responsible for drafting secondary legislation or plant protection laws.

Dr. Gündermann has published many scientific articles in periodicals, books etc. The main focus of these articles is the interpretation of laws according to plant protection and plant health.

Dr. Gündermann was deputy director in the Prison of Amberg, Germany from 1978 to 1985, prosecutor in the Public Prosecutor-office at the District Court Amberg from 1985 to 1987 and judge at the District Court Amberg from 1987 to 1994. As a judge he was temporarily head of a chamber for agricultural affairs.

On 1 January 2008 Dr. Gündermann became Vice President of the Julius Kühn-Institute.
