Expertise: Plant Virology, Plant biotechnology
Education: Graduated from the Department of Plant Protection, Zhejiang Agriculture University (now Zhejiang University) in 1965.
Countries of work experience: He has been in ICRISAT in India for 6 months in 1983; Division of Plant Industry, CSIRO, Australia for 10 months in 1986 and for 9 months in 1989; and MPI, Germany for 3 months in 1997. He has visited 7 universities in the USA for 1 month in 1991 and also visited IACR-Rothamsted and SCRI-Dundee in UK in 1998.
Experience Summary: Professor Cheng is a molecular plant virologist specializing in wheat virus diseases such as barley yellow dwarf virus, wheat yellow mosaic virus and soil-borne wheat mosaic virus with emphasis on of molecular determinants of host-pathogen interactions, development of novel plant disease control strategies including transgenics, pathogen population genetics and dynamics, endophytic microbes and their role in plant development and most recently has conducted research on transgenic wheat expressing virus-derived transgene encoding hairpin RNA resistant to BYDV.
Prof. Cheng's research has been published in more than 80 scientific articles and he is the author of six books. He has received seven national awards. He has been a Professor since 1994, Associate Professor 1988-1994 and Assistant Professor 1980-1988.
His administrative experience includes: Director of Institute of Plant Protection, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and, Director of State Key Laboratory for Biology of Plant Diseases and Insect Pests. He has served as a professor on the faculties of four universities in China. He is currently a member of the national committee of the China Association for Science and Technology and President, China Society of Plant Protection.
