The Official IAPPS Journal
Under a contract with Elsevier Science B.V., the journal Crop Protection is adopted as the Official Journal of IAPPS.
Editorial Policy: It was agreed that the editorial structure and policy for CP was subject to review and possible revision and that the IAPPS Governing Board could make input to that process. And as associate or senior editors rotate off of the CP Editorial Board, recommendations from IAPPS for replacements would be welcomed. IAPPS desires an editorial board representative of the diverse components of integrated pest management and thus not be restricted to plant pathology, entomology, nematology, and weed science but include biotechnology, economics, ecology, etc.
Policy on Page Charges: Elsevier will continue the 'no-page-charge' policy for CP for at least the next year and likely beyond. Given the fact that papers for Elsevier publications come from many countries, including industrialized and developing, it would be very difficult for some to pay the charges and in many situations to collect them.
Space in CP for IAPPS News and Announcements: There will be the option to have up to 4 pages per CP issue for IAPPS news/information. IAPPS must designate an IAPPS News Editor who will have responsibility for assembling and submitting this material to Elsevier in the proper format and time frame.
Proceedings and Special Issues from IPPC Congresses/Mini-Congresses: The options would be to publish proceedings as regular CP issues with distribution to all print subscribers and to provide copies to the IPPC participants OR to publish as an independent volume with copies to IPPC participants and with Elsevier marketing the product through normal channels.
Access to the electronic version of CP is linked with individual memberships at a cost of US$20/year. There are plans for upgrading CP from 8 to 10-issues per year and for changing to make it more adaptable to electronic transmission formats. Through agreements with other publishers, most Elsevier journals have biographic links which permit direct access to the references cited in Elsevier journal articles which is a great convenience. CP does not now have that capability, but will likely be added with the redesign of the journal's format in 1999.
The contract with Elsevier will become effective no later than 1 January 2000.
The IAPPS Logo will be displayed on the front cover of each journal issue along with the statement "Official Journal of the International Association for the Plant Protection Sciences".
Regarding subject matter policy, IAPPS prefers that CP feature IPM and thus reflect agroecosystem approaches, preferably papers based upon broad system management approaches. This may be too restrictive at the outset but would be the long-term editorial goal.
There would be an option on the IAPPS member dues form for a subscription to the print version of CP with an additional cost of $85/year. These copies would be mailed directly to the subscribers by Elsevier.
IAPPS information will also be included in the Elsevier's e-mailed "Tables of Contents" which is distributed to 300-400 crop protection specialists and also in a print version of 'Agronomy and Crop Science Alert'.
