DR E. A. "SHORT" HEINRICHS NOMINATED
NEW SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE
INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE PLANT PROTECTION SCIENCES (IAPPS)

The IAPPS Governing Board is happy to announce the nomination of
Dr. E. A. "Short" Heinrichs
as the new IAPPS Secretary General.

Dr. Heinrichs is an entomologist with expertise in integrated pest management. His research focus has been on the integration of resistant crop varieties with other control tactics in pest management systems, with emphasis on tropical rice. He has also conducted research on soybeans, wheat, groundnut, vegetables, and maize and in estate crops including cashews.

He has had extensive experience in working in multidisciplinary teams involving sociologists, plant breeders, soil scientists, agronomists, economists, plant pathologists, weed scientists, entomologists, and nematologists. He holds a PhD in entomology from Kansas State University and an MS in entomology and a BS in agriculture from the University of Nebraska. International experience in agricultural development involved programs in South (India) and Southeast Asia (Philippines), South America (Brazil) and Africa (Côte d'Ivoire) and collaborative research with NARS in 36 countries. His academic experience includes professorial positions on the faculties the University of Tennessee, Louisiana State University, University of Nebraska and the University of the Philippines, Los Baños. Administrative experience includes Head of IRRI's Department of Entomology in the Philippines, Head of the Department of Entomology at Louisiana State University and Program Leader at WARDA in Côte d'Ivoire, West Africa.

Dr. Heinrich's IPM research is reported in 7 books and over 400 scientific research articles. His book, "Rice-Feeding Insects and Selected natural Enemies in West Africa" has recently been published by IRRI/WARDA.

Dr. Heinrichs is currently Interim Program Director of a USAID supported project, the Integrated Pest Management Collaborative Research Support Program (IPM CRSP) in the Office of International Research, Education and Development (OIRED) at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA. His responsibilities include the management of vegetable and fruit IPM projects at sites in Africa, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, Latin America, South America and Asia.
