SP-IPM GETS A NEW CHAIR

The CGIAR Systemwide Program on Integrated Pest Management (SP-IPM) has nominated Prof. Richard A. Sikora as the next Chair of its Steering Committee. Prof. Sikora assumes the duties in second quarter of 2008. Prof. Sikora is well known in the international IPM arena. He is Head of Soil Ecosystem Phytopathology and Nematology at the Institute for Crop Science and Resource Conservation, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bonn, Germany. He has specialized in phytopathology in soil ecosystems and plant protection for field crops and vegetables in the tropics and subtropics. His research focuses on the influence of multi-trophic interrelationships between pests/diseases and soil biotic and abiotic factors in agroecosystems.

Amongst his numerous scientific honors, Prof. Sikora is Fellow of the European Society of Nematologists and Fellow of the Society of Nematologists in Plant Pathology. He is recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Illinois, USA and the Van den Brande Award from the University of Ghent Belgium for his contributions to science in the field of crop protection. He was recently nominated Fellow of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences in India. He has served in various capacities on at least 20 international scientific boards, committees and societies. Prof Sikora is a widely published and an experienced IPM capacity developer, especially through postgraduate degree training of students from developing countries.

In the past 36 years, Prof. Sikora has conducted short and long term overseas IPM research consultancies, most times in collaboration with SP-IPM partner organizations, in actual/potential target countries served by the SP-IPM, and has contributed IPM advisory services to government agencies in Bahrain, Benin, Brazil, Central America, Costa Rica, Cyprus, East Africa, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Lebanon, Madagascar, Malawi, Middle East, Morocco, Myanmar, Niger, Nigeria, Philippines, Samoa, Syria, Taiwan, Tonga, Tunisia, Vietnam and Yemen. Additionally Prof. Sikora has consulted for the German Development Service (GTZ), Germany Ministry for Science and Technical Cooperation (BMZ), Global IPM Network (FAO), and USAID.

UNEP/TEAP CHAMPION AWARD FOR PROF. BESRI

On the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the Montreal Protocol, the Technology & Economic Assessment Panel (TEAP) of the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) has selected IAPPS Governing Board member and IAPPS Coordinator for Region II (North Africa/Middle East), Prof. Mohamed Besri, to receive the TEAP Champion Award. The award ceremony will take place on Tuesday, 20 September 2007, at an evening reception.

In his award letter to Prof. Besri, the Executive Secretary to the Ozone Secretariat, Mr. Marco Gonzalez says: "The Ozone Secretariat is very pleased to have the opportunity to recognize the contributions of key participants in the ozone process and is looking forward to honouring you for the work that you have done to protect the ozone layer. We will welcome the presence of your friends, associates and loved ones on the date you are receiving the award."

REVISED FRAC MONOGRAPHS NOW AVAILABLE

The Fungicide Resistance Action Committee (FRAC) has always placed a great emphasis on the importance of education in understanding and managing the phenomenon of fungicide resistance. Alongside the information given on its website (www.frac.info) it has published three monographs which provide excellent introductions to fungicide resistance, how to assess the risks involved in its development and how to embark on resistance monitoring campaigns by establishing baseline sensitivity data. The first two monographs in the series have now been completely revised by Dr Keith Brent and Dr Derek Hollomon to include information on recently introduced fungicide chemistry, advances in the analysis of resistance mechanisms and risk and the increasingly important role being played by molecular studies in identifying and monitoring resistance. Both are available on request as hard copies. In addition all three monographs are available as a CD ROM or may be read or downloaded via the FRAC website.
