ASIAN-PACIFIC WEED SCIENCE SOCIETY (APWSS) CONFERENCE
BEIJING, CHINA

The 18th Asian-Pacific Weed Science Society (APWSS) Conference was held recently in Beijing, China from 28 May to 2 June 2001. Over 400 persons participated in the 18th APWSS conference, 190 of which were from China. The balance of 200 plus participants came from 25 other countries/region, including Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Egypt, France, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, UK, USA, Vietnam and Taiwan. There were 124 oral presentations, including nine invited speakers, and 77 posters. Presentations were related to topics of interest to the region such as allelopathy, weed biology and ecology, biological weed control, new herbicides and formulations, herbicide application and technology and environmental aspects of herbicide use. The topics of herbicide resistant weeds and crops, management of barnyard grass and integrated weed management received considerable attention. A one-day field trip was also organized to look closely into the latest farmers' life and practices in China. Eight exhibitions from companies were also included.
At the closing ceremony, six awards were presented for Best Oral Papers (3) and Best Posters (3). Monsanto sponsored these awards, as in the past.
The first place in Best Oral Papers was:
- M.C. Casimero, A.M. Baltazar, J.S. Manuel, S.R. Obien and S.K. De Datta (Philippines/USA) "Population dynamics and growth of weeds in rain fed rice-onion systems in response to chemical and cultural control methods"
Second places in the oral category were presented to:
- I.T. Hwang, K.H. Lee, S.H. Park, B. H. Lee, K. S. Hong S.S. Han and K. Y. Cho (Korea) (K.H. Lee presented the paper) "Resistance to acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors in a biotype of Monochoria vaginalis discovered in Korea"
- X.J. Li, D.Z. Lu, Y.H. Li, and R. E. Blackshaw (China/Canada) "Roundup tank mixtures with atrazine plus acetochlor for weed control in zero tillage corn."
The first place in Best Posters was presented to:
- E. Warabi, K. Usui and H. Matsumoto (Japan) "Mechanism of resistance to oxyfluorfen in selected soybean cell lines."
Second places in this category were awarded to:
- B. Tao, F. Luan and W. Xiang (China) "Resistant genetic character of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) to glyphosate"
- A.B. Mislamah, B.B. Baki, J. Abdul Munir, M.Z. Abdullah, and D. Tan (Malaysia) "Taxonomic affiliation and nomenclatorial status of weedy rice accessions in Malaysia"
The International Weed Science Society actively supported the Conference with three members of the current Board, viz. Vice President (Anis Rahman), Secretary/Treasurer (Bernal Velverde) and the Past President (Ricardo Labrada) in attendance, as well as two people that were very active in the 3rd IWSS Congress, viz. Jonny Gressel and Jao Baptista. The 19th APWSS Conference is to be held in Manila, Philippines in February 2003 and the 20th Conference is scheduled for Vietnam in 2005.

ANNOUNCING 10TH IUPAC INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON THE CHEMISTRY OF CROP PROTECTION
BASEL, SWITZERLAND
AUGUST 4 - 9, 2002
A 2002 key event for all crop protection scientists working in academia, research institutions, industry and related technology transfer units is the 10th IUPAC International Congress on the Chemistry of Crop Protection. It will be held from August 4 to 9, 2002, in the modern Convention Center of Basel, Switzerland, and feature state-of-the-art approaches to the discovery of new active ingredients and biochemical/molecular targets, developments in analytical, environmental and regulatory chemistry, and other innovative tools available today for crop protection and the safe production of healthy food.
The scientific programme has been designed to address both general and specific aspects of crop protection science, technology and regulation. Specifics will be handled within the following six main topics:
- Disease Control: Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology
- Weed Control: Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology
- Insect Control: Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology
- Formulation and Application: Methodology, Performance, Safety
- Environmental Fate and Safety
- Residues and Consumer Safety
Each of these main topics will consist of for sub-topics. These 24 sub-topics represent the backbone of the congress and will be organised as poster sessions. Furthermore, each main topic offers four invited lectures, six research papers selected on the base of their innovative value, and two workshops discussing current developments in R&D crop protection or controversial science and policy issues.
Topics of general interest will be covered by invited plenary lectures and several intertopic workshops. Examples from front-end synthetic chemistry, the role of functional genomics in research, high-throughput technologies in chemical and biological research and expectations associated with target-based discovery will be part of the programme as well as recent methods and concepts on risk assessments, challenges in product manufacturing, residue minimisation in the food chain, the disposal of obsolete pesticide stocks in developing countries and a discussion of the contribution of agrochemicals to sustainable agriculture.

Authors of posters are requested to prepare a one-page abstract in English. It must be submitted electronically via the above-mentioned website between December 1, 2001 and March 31, 2002.
DATES FOR THE 15TH INTERNATIONAL PLANT PROTECTION CONGRESS (IPPC)
A number of communications have given incorrect dates for the 15th IPPC, which will be held in China. The correct dates for this congress are July 6 - 11, 2003. Please make a note of this.
