PROMINENT IAPPS MEMBERS RECEIVE SP-IPM AWARD

At the recent annual meeting of the Systemwide Program on Integrated Pest Management (SP-IPM), held at ICARDA in Aleppo, Syria, February 21-24, 2005, two of our most prominent members, Dr. Braima James and Dr. N.S. Talekar received a special award for their outstanding contribution to IPM.
Dr. Braima James has been an energetic and avid supporter of IAPPS for many years. Braima is an IAPPS Governing Board member and is Network Coordinator for Region III: Sub-Saharan Africa. Braima is a fervent IPM educationist specialized in participatory identification and analysis of food production constraints and of technical and partnership opportunities to develop and apply eco-friendly options to control pests in field crops and post-harvest storage. Prior to joining the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in 1993, Braima was a tenured faculty at the University of Sierra Leone and a FAO National Plant Protection Expert in that country. He became coordinator of the West African LOOP of BioNET INTERNATIONAL in 1998, coordinator of the Systemwide Program on Integrated Pest Management (SP-IPM) in mid 2000, and IAPPS sub-regional coordinator for sub-Sahara Africa in 2001. With these and other stakeholder groups, he continues to strengthen national and local capacity in the development, adaptation and implementation of IPM in Africa, and to increase recognition of IPM impact in agriculture, environment, health, food quality, livelihoods and national economies. Braima has held/holds important posts in civic, public and international affairs.
Dr. N. S. Talekar is a long- time member and supporter of IAPPS. He is a world expert on vegetable IPM and has made major contributions to promoting vegetable IPM for small-holder farmers in Asia through his work at AVRDC- The World Vegetable Center. One of his many contributions has been the development and employment of pheromone-baited traps for the management of the eggplant (brinjal) fruit and shoot borer, Leucinodes orbonalis (Guenee) which has minimized the need for pesticides. Dr. Talekar, a native of India, has spent his entire career at AVRDC, serving the vegetable farmers of the region, and has established a highly effective vegetable IPM network which is having a major impact on the economic efficiency of vegetable farming and in the development of sustainable and environmentally safe vegetable pest management practices.

CALL FOR LETTERS OF INTEREST

The NSF Center for IPM (US, cipm.ncsu.edu) has submitted proposals to the USAID IPM CRSP for 2 "Global Theme" planning grants: Information Technology and Invasive Species. These planning grants are for the purpose of bringing together partners to develop a full proposal for each of the global themes.

The decision on planning grant awards should be made by the end of March, with a very short time available for developing full proposals. More information about the IPM CRSP program and Virginia Tech, the managing entity, please see http://www.ag.vt.edu/ipmcrsp/index.asp.

In preparation for the planning phase, and with the desire to be as inclusive as possible, the NSF Center for IPM would like to invite any scientists/organizations with an interest in either information technology or invasive species to join with us in developing these proposals. Please contact Dr. Yulu Xia (Yulu_Xia@ncsu.edu) with a description of your interests. We will be happy to share with you our vision and approach to working with these 2 global themes, and discuss any projects that might provide areas of collaboration.
