16th International Plant Protection Congress (IPPC), 2007

Selection of Host Country and Organizing Body

Invitation to Submit Proposals

International Plant Protection Congresses (IPPC) have been held every four years since 1946. The site selection and overall theme of the program of the IPPC's are determined by the International Association for the Plant Protection Sciences (IAPPS). The 15th IPPC will be held in Beijing, China in July 2003, and it is being organized by the China Society of Plant Protection. Program and registration information for that Congress is available at these websites: <http://www.ipmchina.net/ippc/> and <http://www.congress.com.cn>.

The IPPC's cover all aspects of the science and practice of plant protection worldwide. They present and discuss advances and issues in biological, chemical and husbandry-based methods of pest management, with emphasis on their integrated, safe and socially acceptable implementation within farming, forestry, glass-house, and other plant protection environments.

Registered attendance in recent years has been in the range of 1200-2000 participants plus 200-300 accompanying persons.

Congress Proceedings must be published. The format of these, whether full papers or abstracts, is determined by the organizers. They should be available to participants at the start of the Congress.

Organizers are expected to inform and to consult with the IAPPS Governing Board with regard to the planning and conduct of the Congress programme, including financial arrangements. A meeting of the IAPPS General Assembly (1-2 hour session) is held during the Congress and must be accommodated.

Congress Criteria that should be reflected in bid proposal:

  1. The Congress should aim primarily to communicate and discuss new information and current views concerning the worldwide development of plant protection technologies and their effective, safe and sustainable implementation in integrated crop management systems.

  2. The candidate host country should identify the expertise in the science, technology and practice of crop protection required to take the lead in designing and managing a major international congress. The range of disciplines involved will include entomology, plant pathology, weed science, environmental studies, biotechnology, chemistry, biochemistry, ecology, economics, sociology. An international advisory committee should be appointed to assist in organization and in securing international input into programme development.

  3. The Congress must be self-financing, the host organization being responsible for all financial liabilities. The organizers set and receive registration fees, and obtain support from national and international bodies. The proposal should identify potential sources of income in addition to registration fees. A small amount of 'start-up' money (US$10,000) is normally passed on by the host organization of the previous Congress.

  4. There must be suitable convention facilities (including rooms for plenary, concurrent and poster sessions, trade/educational exhibition area, and adequate hotel accommodations offering a range of prices). Convenient access to an international airport is essential.

  5. Cite major international scientific congresses or conferences that have been hosted within the past 10-15 years.

Organizations interested in planning and running the 2007 IPPC are now invited to submit applications no later than 15 February 2003 for consideration by the IAPPS Governing Board. Applications may be sent by postal mail or by e-mail. If brochures are included as part of the application (e.g., to give information about the venue), eight (8) copies should be sent by postal mail.
