XVII INTERNATIONAL PLANT PROTECTION CONGRESS (IPPC), 2011 SELECTION OF HOST COUNTRY AND ORGANIZING BODY

INVITATION TO SUBMIT PROPOSALS

International Plant Protection Congresses (IPPCs) have been held every four (4) years since 1946 (with few exceptions). The site selection and the overall theme of the programs of the IPPC's are determined by the International Association for the Plant Protection Sciences (IAPPS). The 16th IPPC will be held in Glasgow, Scotland in October 2007, and it is being organized by the BCPC. Program and registration information for that Congress is available at: <http://www.bcpc.org/iapps2007/>.

The IPPCs embrace all aspects of the science and practice of plant protection worldwide. They present and discuss advances and issues in biological, chemical, and husbandry-based methods of pest management with emphasis on their integrated, safe, and socially-acceptable implementation within farming, forestry, glass-house, and other plant protection environments. Registered attendance within recent years has been in the range of 1200-2000 participants plus 200-300 accompanying persons.

Congress proceedings must be published. The format of these, whether full-papers or abstracts, is determined by the organizers. They should be available to participants at the on-site registration desk.

Organizers are expected to inform and consult with the IAPPS Governing Board with regard to the planning and conduct of the congress program, including financial arrangements. A meeting of the IAPPS General Assembly (1-2 hour session) is held during the congress and must be accommodated within the program.

Congress Criteria that should be reflected in the bid proposal:

  1. The congress should focus primarily on the communication and discussion of new information and current views concerning the world-wide development of plant protection technologies and their effective, safe, and sustainable implementation in integrated crop management systems.

  2. The candidate host country should verify the availability of crop protection expertise requisite to lead the design and implementation of a major international congress. The range of disciplines involved would include entomology, plant pathology, weed science, environmental studies, biotechnology, chemistry/biochemistry, ecology, economics, and sociology. An international advisory committee should be appointed to assist with the conceptualization/organization of the program and in securing international input into program development.

  3. The congress must be self-financing with the host organization being responsible for all financial liabilities. The organizers set and receive registration fees and solicit support from national and international bodies. The proposal should identify potential sources of income in addition to registration fees. A small 'start-up fund' is available to the new host organization upon request to IAPPS. These funds must be returned to IAPPS at the end of the congress.

  4. There must be suitable convention facilities available and affordable. The facility must accommodate concurrent paper and poster sessions, trade/educational exhibition area, and adequate hotel accommodations offering a range of prices. Convenient access to an airport offering direct international flight service from multiple cities is essential.

  5. Cite major international scientific congresses or conferences that have been hosted within the past 10-15 years.

  6. Organizations interested in planning and managing the 2011 IPPC are now invited to submit applications no later than 15 February 2007 for consideration by the IAPPS Governing Board. Applications should be sent by postal mail (8 copies please) to the following:
