An extensive scientific program has been planned, organized around plenary lectures, symposia, workshops and poster sessions. The opening ceremony will feature speeches by Dr. Hans R. Herren, President of IAPPS, on "Plant Health Management Issues of Tomorrow: Back to the Future", and Prof. Yu-Yuan Guo, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, on "Advances in Plant Protection in China". Twelve plenary lectures will feature a wide variety of topics including transgenic crops and insects, a GIS-based decision support system, signaling in plant stress and in pest resistance, weed science, post-harvest pest control, insect biocontrol, hypersensitive response-based resistance, rodent management in rice, and new developments in pesticide chemistry. Symposia, workshops and posters are organized into three main areas:
- Advances in Plant Protection Strategies and Technology
- Development and Application of Pest Management Systems in Various Farming Systems
- Safety for the Consumers, Operators and Environment
Areas are further divided into sections, and each section is divided into a number of topics.

3rd PAN PACIFIC CONFERENCE ON PESTICIDE SCIENCE
HONOLULU, HAWAII
JUNE 1 - 4, 2003
The third Pan Pacific Conference on Pesticide Science will be sponsored by the Pesticide Science Society of Japan and the Agrochemical Division of the American Chemical Society.
The conference aims to bring together scientists who study agrochemicals and vector control agents, as well as environmental health issues from various Pan Pacific member countries in order to present technical achievements and exchange opinions about pesticide science, with the goal of advancing the research in those regions. The sessions will include keynote speakers, invited speakers on a variety of subjects in the areas of new discoveries and environmental fate & safety management as well as poster presentation and discussion.
A special welcome is extended to scientists of Pan Pacific member countries to participate in the poster sessions. Furthermore, the long held Japan-China Pesticide Conference is scheduled to be combined with the Pan Pacific Conference on Pesticide Science on this occasion.

10TH IUPAC INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS
ON THE CHEMISTRY OF CROP PROTECTION
Participants enjoyed an excellent program at the 10th IUPAC International Congress on the Chemistry of Crop Protection, held in Basel, Switzerland, August 4 - 9, 2002.
There was a good representation from many countries with participants from the chemical industry, academia, and government.
The program was organized around plenary lectures and main topics, which consisted of lectures, oral research papers, workshops, and posters. There were six main topics this year: disease control, weed control, insect control, formulation/application, environment and residues. The topic on environment drew the largest number of posters, indicating a large amount of interest, as well as support, in that area. In addition to main topic workshops, there were intertopic workshops. This was a very worthwhile approach since a great deal of current research crosses the more traditional topic divisions. For example, there were workshops on primary and secondary targets in pests vs. mammals, environmental risk assessment, and contribution of crop protection products to sustainable agriculture.
There were quite a few reoccurring thoughts presented in the plenary addresses. These included
- The need exists to feed a growing population with limited land and water.
- Biotechnology plays a critical role in agricultural production but has problems in Europe and Japan.
- Although chemicals will remain a vital part of crop protection, market growth has slowed, a factor reflected in reduced company profits and the merging of many companies.
- Sustainability will not be achieved unless agriculture is economically viable. Chemicals can contribute to sustainability but must be economically efficient, environmentally friendly, and socially acceptable. These qualifying factors need to be measured.
- Molecular biology has become thoroughly integrated with the more traditional biochemical approaches in elucidating organism-pesticide interactions.
