The Insect Toxicology 2000 Conference was held July 17-19 at the Clark Kerr Campus of the University of California at Berkeley. The conference, which emphasized insects in a toxic environment, had 113 participants from 12 countries with Japan contributing the major foreign delegation. The scientific program featured 34 oral presentations and 18 posters. A major theme of most research was understanding the molecular mode of action for insecticides at the voltage-gated sodium channel, nicotinic acetylcholine receptor and GABA-gated chloride channel. Other topics presented included insect resistance to insecticides, ecdysone agonists, the insect cuticle as a vulnerable site, insecticidal natural products, and alternatives to chemical control. The conference concluded with a discussion of the future of insect toxicology as a discipline.
The XXI International Congress of Entomology took place in Iguassu Falls, Brazil, August 20 - 26, 2000. The meeting was co-convened with the XVIII Brazilian Congress of Entomology, and was a joint promotion of Sociedade Entomologica do Brasil and Embrapa/Soja. There were over 4,000 participants from 72 countries, and about 1,000 speakers, presenting 265 symposia, in 24 scientific sessions, covering topics on agricultural and forested lands, traditional and sustainable agriculture, and all disciplines of entomology (insects and mites), including recent advances in incorporating computer science technologies. A television Talk Show, hosted by Décio Gazzoni, the President of the Congress, featured interviews with plenary speakers. Cultural highlights included tours to the falls and the surrounding subtropical rain forest, and several cultural events, including a "steer party," which had its origin in northeast Brazil, and a dance production that traced the history of Brazil.
One session, "Ecology of Pesticides, Resistance and Insect-tolerant Transgenic Crops," addressed new insecticidal chemistries, particularly toxicology and mode of action, the mechanisms, genetics, evolution, and management of insect resistance, pesticides and ecotoxicology, botanical insecticides, and the options and impact of transgenic crops. Another on "Integrated Pest Management" focused on area-wide projects, particularly those for management of codling moth, silverleaf whitefly, and pests of grapes, citrus, rice, and tropical agriculture. A third on "Urban and Stored Product Entomology", had presentations on trapping, the physiology of stored product insects, insect growth regulators, juvenoids, and hormones as insecticides, fumigation in controlled atmospheres, and integrated pest management, including presentations on termites, cockroaches, and other household and structural pests.
John Lawton was the featured speaker, presenting "Entomologists and the Conservation of Biodiversity," with 17 additional plenary lectures given. A special session to explore potential fruit fly research cooperation between Brazil/Embrapa and USDA/Agricultural Research Service was organized by Miguel Borges (Embrapa). Panel participants included Borges and Mauricio Lopes (Embrapa), Aldo Malavasi (Brazil), and Ken Vick (USA/ARS). Presentations spanned all areas of fruit fly research and management. One area of potential collaboration that was discussed in depth was the sequencing the Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly) genome. A document will record the discussion, and future meetings will be convened to continue the dialogue.
The U.S. National Academies' National Research Council recently released a report indicating chemical pesticides will continue to play a significant role in U.S. agriculture, not only because the environmental compatibility of pesticides is increasing, but also because effective and affordable alternatives are not universally available. The report, resulting from a study funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, concluded that more government-sponsored research and incentives are needed to spur the development and use of alternative pesticides or new chemical pesticides that pose fewer risks to humans and the environment, and that are not too costly to use. Chemical pesticides should remain part of pest-management tactics that draw on a variety of approaches. The 13th International Reinhardsbrunn Symposium on Modern Fungicides and Antifungal Compounds will be held May 14 - 18, 2001. It is supported by the German Phytomedical Society and the British Crop Protection Council. This is the latest in a series of symposia, established by Professor Horst Lyr in 1962, that focus on recent research on the biological and biochemical properties of modern fungicides and other plant-disease-control agents, in relation to their discovery, development and effectiveness of use in agriculture.
Topics will include mechanisms of action and selectivity, biochemical and genetic aspects of the development of resistance in target organisms, induced disease resistance in plants, use of molecular diagnostics in disease control, and methods of discovery of new anti-fungal compounds. Questions of food quality, especially mycotoxin contamination, will also be considered. There will be invited lectures and also offered oral and poster contributions.

The 10th IUPAC International Congress of the Chemistry of Crop Protection will be held at the Convention Centre in Basel, Switzerland, during August 4 - 9, 2002. The Congress theme 'Innovative Solutions for Healthy Crops' represents an open discussion of State-of-the- Art approaches in chemical synthesis, analytical sciences, discovery and selection tools, molecular and other scientific areas that are shaping the future of crop protection in sustainable agriculture.

This conference will be held at the Hilton Metropole Hotel in Brighton UK November 13-16, 2000. It is the latest of the long-established series of crop protection conferences that are organised annually by BCPC (British Crop Protection Council), and which attract some 1500 registered participants from industrial, government and academic organisations worldwide.
A one-day pre-Conference symposium, on Monday 13 November, will consider the highly topical and controversial subject of "Consumer Exposure to Pesticide Residues, GMOs and Natural Toxins: Putting Risks in Perspective."
The main conference starts on Tuesday 14 November with the Bawden Lecture, to be given this year by Dr David Evans, Research and Development Director of Zeneca Agrochemicals, titled "New Era, New Challenges, New Solutions." This will be followed by thirty platform or poster sessions covering many aspects of pest and disease management including new compounds, integrated management methods, environmental safety, regulation, pesticide resistance, transgenic plants, organic production systems and biological control agents. Participants receive the three-volume Proceedings at the start of the Conference. A Trade Services Exhibition and Scientific and Educational Exhibition, together comprising some eighty stands, will be held throughout the conference.

The Crop Protection Society of Ethiopia (CPSE) will host its 9th annual meeting jointly with the 14th Meeting and Scientific conference of the African Association of Insect Scientists (AAIS) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, June 4 - 8, 2001.
